Add “browns” (carbon material) to the mixture and leave the door open to your ComposTwin to allow some evaporation of the moisture. Remember, an active compost pile requires about 50% moisture.
TopMy compost is decaying too slowly, how can I speed it up?
To speed decomposition, try chopping up the material inside. Large particles will decay much slower than small ones. You can also add a small amount of livestock manure, or a little topsoil, or compost activator to activate the decaying process. This will introduce microorganisms to the pile that help in the decaying process. Mantis offers Compost Activator available via our on-line shopping.
If the compost smells like ammonia or sulfur, there is too much green material or the compost chamber is too wet. Add carbon material (“browns”) such as dried leaves or dried grass clippings. You may also add a shovel of dry soil to the ComposTwin chamber to help absorb some of the moisture.
Your pile lacks moisture or nitrogen. Check the moisture in the ComposTwin chamber. It should be as wet as a wrung out sponge. Add greens to your pile, such as fresh grass clippings or vegetable scraps. Mantis offers a Moisture Meter – visit our on-line shopping.
